First public consultation event in Swanley takes place

23 October 2019

The first public consultation event about a new urgent treatment centre for Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley took place on the evening of  Wednesday 16 October in Swanley.

This was a public meeting held to discuss proposals put forward by local doctors to make changes to how urgent care services are delivered in the area.  Other consultation activity – such as roadshows and drop-in sessions, online and street surveys – have been underway since the middle of August.

Attendees heard from local GP and Urgent Care Clinical Lead, Dr Nigel Sewell, and Director of Strategic Transformation, Gerrie Adler, about the two options being consulted on, and then took part in a detailed group discussion about the proposals.

Overall the attendees thought that an urgent treatment centre was a good idea and they could see the benefits it could bring to local people. Some of the key issues discussed included:

  • concerns about transport, traffic and parking at each of the proposed locations
  • the benefits of locating the urgent treatment centre alongside an A&E department
  • whether an urgent treatment centre should be located closest to the largest populations or where it’s easier for everyone, including those in more remote areas, to reach it
  • how the proposals fit into the wider changes happening in the local NHS – for example improvements to local care in the area.

All the feedback gathered at the event will be analysed together with all other responses to the consultation and published in an independent report.

The consultation responses will be considered by the Clinical Commissioning Group Governing Body alongside other data and evidence (for example on clinical best practice, staffing numbers, finances and buildings) gathered during the course of the review.

The consultation runs until midnight on 4 November 2019 and the Governing Body expect to make a final decision on the location of the urgent treatment centre in early 2020.

The event was the first of three public consultation events taking place this month. The next event starts at 6pm on Monday 28 October at Princes Park Stadium in Dartford, with the final event starting at 6pm on Wednesday 30 October at the Gravesham Civic Centre in Gravesend.
